Whitley Bay Billingham Synthonia
Match Report: 08/09/07
Whitley Bay 2, Billingham Synthonia 1

Arngrove Northern League Division 1

The game, started brightly with both teams attacking with intention, both defences coping adequately.

Bay had the first chance of the match on 12 minutes with a decent effort that was saved by Synners 'keeper Gary Riches.

After 20 minutes, Colin Iley got into the box only to be denied by a strong tackle. As he was getting up Iley was struck in the face by Bay's Woodhouse's knee, the incident was spotted by the Referees assistant. After discussion the Referee sent off the offending player and awarded Billingham a Penalty. NEIL CAMPBELL stepped up to convert the spot-kick on 21 minutes.

Whitley were straight on the attack and a pass sent in that should have been dealt with, struck Brian Close on his right fore arm as he mis-judged the bounce. The referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot for a Bay penalty kick. KERR stepping up on 23 minutes to put the ball out of reach of Gary Riches who dived the right way.

On 29 minutes Colin Iley crossed for Neil Campbell to fire in a shot that was saved by the Bay 'keeper.

Then, just before the interval, Synners were caught in possesion, but The Whitley striker sent his shot just wide.

Half-time: Whitley Bay 1, Synners 1

The second half saw Whitley coming out the stronger despite their numbers disadvantage. After 51 minutes they hit the bar with a good effort.

The next few minutes saw the match become disjointed with the referee dishing out yellow cards and trying to keep the game in control.

On 61 minutes Billingham's Lev Yalcin had his 25 yard shot saved by the Bay 'keeper.

Then after 76 minutes Whitley hit the cross-bar for a second time, as Riches was beaten.

It was only a matter of time until Whitley got there reward, and this came after 75 minutes. Some good attacking play by Bay with ROBINSON showing good work to put the home side in front.

Then Campbell got into a great position and had a chance to equalise, but never got hold of his shot and the 'keeper gathered easily.

In what was a physical encounter, ten-man Whitley held on and fully deserved to take the three points.
