Washington Billingham Synthonia
Match Report: 19/04/08
Washington 0, Billingham Synthonia 2

Arngrove Northern League Division 1

Synthonia visited relegation threatened Washington for their last away game of the season.

Synners started the game on the front foot, forcing the play on the hosts. After 3 minutes a James Magowan shot deflected into the Washington keeper, Steven Wilson's arms. Then after 7 minutes Michael Jameson and Neil Campbell combined to set up Nick Scaife. His shot lacked any venom and Wilson caught easily.

Washington's first effort came after 10 minutes when captain Dean Critchlow got in on the blind side of the Synners defence, but shot into the side netting.

After 14 minutes a Scaife free-kick from the left came to Colin Iley close to goal, but he never caught his shot and Wilson collected. Then in the 18th minute, a Jameson corner from the right was flicked on by Michael Cater to Iley who turned and shot, but the ball was blocked on the line by a defender.

The hosts had a great chance after 22 minutes when Peter Watling went through on goal. Synners keeper John Jackson however, was quickly off his line to clear.

Synthonia opened the scoring in the 29th minute. After some good work from midfield, Iley crossed from the right to JAMES MAGOWAN, who controlled and fired in a low shot past Wilson.

Washington struggled to get anywhere near to Billingham's goal, with Synners dictating the play. Critchlow tried a shot in the 34th minute, but Jackson easily gathered.

Simon Shaw tried a long range shot in the 39th minute, but the effort was straight at Wilson. Then a Washington ball over the top saw Critchlow beat the offside and run in on goal. Jackson was again alert and out of his box to punt clear.

In the 44th minute Iley found Jameson in space on the left and he cut in to fire a shot that was heading for the top corner. Wilson did well to tip the ball over. The resulting corner saw Jameson pick out NEIL CAMPBELL who's header took a slight deflection and nested in the corner of the net.

Half-time: Washington 0, Synners 2

Washington had a great opportunity to get back in the game after 53 minutes, when Shaw's back pass was intercepted by Critchlow, but he shot straight at Jackson.

After 69 minutes a Washington corner from the left was aimed at the far post. The ball headed back across goal was only half cleared by the Synners defence and fell to Carl Pennington. His shot though flew over the bar.

Synthonia came back in the 71st minute when Cater won the ball in midfield and laid the ball left to Craig perry. His cross found Magowan, who's powerful shot went over the bar.

Billingham had striker Magowan sent off in the 80th minute. A foul by James Mobberley saw Magowan lash out, with the referee having no hesitation in giving him his marching orders.

Synners almost scored a third in the 83rd minute. A Scaife corner from the right was headed goalwards by Cater, but a defender cleared the ball offf the goal-line.

The hosts almost gained some consolation after 88 minutes when Watling made a good run in the inside right channel. His shot however summed up Washington's afternoon as Jackson easily smothered the effort.

Next up for Synthonia is the visit of Whitley Bay to the PTS Stadium on Wednesday evening, for what will be Billingham's last game of the season.
