FA Carlsberg Vase 5th Round

Synthonia welcomed Wessex league side Bournemouth to the Glamal Stadium and made just one change from the win away at Runcorn Town in the previous round. Curtis Collantine started at right-back with Robbie Bettson moving into the midfield in place of the unavailable Chris Emms.

Teams:
BILLINGHAM SYNTHONIA: Moody, Collantine, McWilliams (Dalton), Wray, Abel, Liddle, Hillerby(c), Crossen (M Jameson), Gardner (Storr), Earl, Bettson. Subs not used; Horsman, Hodgson.

BOURNEMOUTH: Frampton, Crow, Jackson, Blake, Crutcher(c), Cream, Pinder (Ingram), Rowley, Ewen, Saadi (Taylor), Hogan (Daysh). Subs not used; Phillipson-Master, Vaughan.

The visitors kicked off the match against a blustering wind, but Billingham quickly gained possession and Dan McWilliams forced a first minute corner. The Chay Liddle flag-kick from the right though, was cleared by the Poppies defence. A 5th minute attack through the midfield for Bournemouth saw the ball played left for Sean Hogan, but his shot was well wide of the right hand post. Chances were kept to a minimum for both teams, but a good chance for Synners went by after 19 minutes when a Liddle corner from the left found David Abel who saw his first time shot go just wide. A minute later and Liddle did well to control the ball and keep it in play on the right bye-line and he played inside for Ross Gardner who could only shoot over the bar. A foul by McWilliams saw him cautioned in the 25th minute with the Fawzi Saadi free-kick from the right side of the penalty area coming to nothing. Synthonia continued to play themselves into good positions, but in the main Poppies keeper Max Frampton was left untroubled. A Collantine cross from the right found Gardner on the far side and he set up Matt Crossen who shot wide. Then a Danny Earl cross from the left found Crossen who saw his first time shot deflect wide for a corner. Liddle's flag-kick again found Abel and this time the defender headed wide of the target. The last chance of the half came to Synners just before the break when a Crossen pass found Earl on a run in the left channel, but again Frampton was untroubled as the striker shot wide of the near post.

Half-time: Synners 0, Bournemouth 0

Bournemouth attacked early after the restart with a long range Saadi shot going over the bar. Billingham came back at the visitors with a Liddle short corner to Bettson seeing the latter play in Gardner on the left angle of the penalty area. His curling effort on goal though, was comfortable for Frampton. Bournemouth then saw a shot blocked by Danny Wray before a low cross from Dave Ewen was gathered by SYnners keeper Josh Moody. A stinging shot from the Poppies Saadi after 69 minutes went just wide of the left hand upright and a few minutes later substitute Luke Ingram saw his low shot comfortably saved by Moody. Bournemouth at this point continued to create openings and a shot from Jake Rowley forced Abel into making a good defensive block. In the 81st minute a Saadi corner from the right came to Hogan who glanced his header wide of the target. The last chance of the 90 minutes came Bournemouth's way when a cross from the left came to Ingram in front of goal, but he directed his header straight into the arms of Moody.

Full-time: Synners 0, Bournemouth 0

A great chance for the visitors to take the lead went just two minute into the extra time when substitute Adam Taylor saw his low drive on goal bring a great save out of Moody. Synners then came forward with Earl seeing his goal bound shot blocked by the Bournemouth defence. A David Hillerby long range shot went wide to leave the game goalles at the end of the first half of extra time. A good run from the visitors Max Cream saw him move into a shooting position, but saw his effort wide of the target. Then another Hillerby long range shot went wide for Synners. Bournemouth were back on the attack with a Cream cross coming to Taylor who saw his shot diverted into the arms of Moody by Kane Daysh. The last few minutes saw tired legs from both sides, but also chances from either to avert a replay. Firstly substitute Michael Jameson's free-kick from the right was met by fellow sub Richie Storr, but his header was comfortable for Frampton. Then the Poppies advanced as Cream whipped in a shot which deflected wide of Moody's goal to leave the game goalless.

Full-time (aet): Synners 0, Bournemouth 0

Referee: Mr P Wright, Assistants: D Midgley, J Illingworth, 4th Official: C Simpson.

Synners now travel to the south coast to Bournemouth for the replay next Saturday afternoon where a place in the last eight of the competition and a home tie against West Auckland Town awaits the winners.
