Match Report: 29/12/07 Billingham Synthonia 0, Jarrow Roofing BCA 3
Arngrove Northern League Division 1
Synners welcomed bottom club Jarrow Roofing to the PTS Stadium hoping to get back on track after two consecutive home defeats against Dunston in the Vase, and the derby day match against Billingham Town.
Christian Hanson & Paul Atkinson returned to the Billingham starting line-up in the heart of defence after suspensions, with striker Lee Ellison making his debut after transferring from West Auckland Town. Roofing without a win on their travels this term and just one league win all season.
The visitors started with purpose and after 7 minutes a cross by Hutchinson was met with a fine header from Tate that came back off the cross-bar.
A minute later Michael Jameson fired in a fierce long range shot that was straight at Jarrow 'keeper Robinson.
Jarrow continued to play the better football and after 24 minutes Gibson almost put enough pressure on Synners 'keeper John Jackson who cleared.
Synthonia responded when Ellison found Colin Iley but the Synners front man shot straight at Robinson. Then on 29 minutes Neil Campbell flicked the ball on for Iley but the ball was well cut out by Jarrow defender Gary Brown to concede a corner. The resulting flag-kick went straight into Robinson's arms.
Jameson had a good chance after 34 minutes when he received the ball just outside the penalty area, his shot going inches over the bar.
After 40 minutes Ellison did well to hold the ball before passing to the overlapping Jameson. His cross from the left almost found Iley at the back post.
Roofing broke the deadlock on 44 minutes. A Hutchinson corner from the right was flicked on and seemed to be heading out of danger, when CRAIG TATE collected to fire in to the far corner of the net.
Half-time: Synners 0, Jarrow 1
Jarrow almost extended their lead after 49 minutes. A 30-yard strike from Tate that Jackson did well to save and push onto the bar to go out for a corner.
The visitors got further reward after 51 minutes when a cross from Jonathan Gibson was met with a fine header from the un-marked CRAIG TATE for his and Roofing's second of the match.
After 66 minutes Iley sent in a cross that was met by the head of Brian Close, the effort going inches wide.
Roofing almost extended their lead after 79 minutes when they broke out of defence with speed. Hutchinson this time pulling his shot wide of the upright.
Synners had a great opportunity to haul themselves back in the game on 82 minutes. An Iley cross was met by substitute Anthony Abel who summed up Billingham's day when he directed his header just wide when it looked easier to score.
Then after 87 minutes Simon Shaw sent in a 35 yard free-kick from a central position after Iley was fouled, but the shot was comfortable for the 'keeper.
Jarrow completed a miserable afternoon for Synners after 89 minutes when CHRIS ARCHER received the ball in acres of space to advance one on one with Jackson. The striker taking the ball past the 'keeper before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.
Synthonia tried to get some consolation when Iley had a shot that flew just wide of the angle. Then in stoppage time Campbell found substitute Jason Honeyman whose low drive across the six-yard box was just missed by Abel.
The defeat leaves Synners in a bad run of form to end 2007 which has seen them lose ground on the leaders, as well as exiting two cup competitions. With 5 defeats in 6 League and cup games, four of those defeats coming at home. Synthonia start the new year with all four January games away from home, starting with a trip to fourth placed Sunderland Nissan next Saturday.
