Billingham Synthonia Glasshoughton Welfare
Match Report: 20/08/08
Billingham Synthonia 5, Glasshoughton Welfare 1

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round (Replay)

Synthonia welcomed Glasshoughton Welfare to The PTS stadium, making two changes from the first meeting. Steven Baynes returned to left-back with James Magowan making his first start of the season up front following a three match ban.

Synners started the game with purpose, looking to put the visitors under pressure. After 6 minutes some good play from Michael Cater and David Yale saw the latter cross to Tyson Masters, but Welfare keeper Dane Whittlestone caught easily.

Two minutes later Nathan Jameson made a strong run through a crowded box and lifted the ball over Whittlestone towards goal, only to see Colin Leung clear the ball off the line.

In the 12th minute a Nathan Jameson corner from the left was met by Masters, his shot was blocked and the ball fell kindly for Magowan, but he was called for offside. Then a minute later a Michael Jameson pass found Masters. He jinked inside the penalty area and laid the ball off to Magowan, his shot though, was straight at Whittlestone.

As was the same on Saturday, Billingham were creating lots of chances, and it was a case of deja vu in the 16th minute when a Baynes long ball forward saw Magowan and Masters combine, with Masters shot beating the keeper, only to clip the upright.

Synthonia were rocked in the 19th minute with Welfare's first attack of the game. Glenn Shelley flicked on a long free-kick to MATTHEW JACKSON who headed the ball passed Synners keeper Peter Keen to give the visitors the lead.

Synners continued to press, and in the 21st minute Masters again beat the Houghton defence to run at goal. Whittlestone was out of his box and blocked the striker's goalbound shot with his hands. The referee giving the stopper a yellow card. The resulting Nathan Jameson free-kick went wide of the target.

Billingham found the breakthrough in the 24th minute. Baynes made a run to the by-line and sent in a cross close to the keeper. Whittlestone however, fumbled the ball and TYSON MASTERS was on hand to net from close range and tie the game up.

The visitors then had a good five minute spell of possession. In the 29th minute Jackson sent in a 30-yard shot which was well held by Keen. Then two minutes later, a well worked move ended with a Jackson header under pressure, which went wide of the target.

The hosts took back control of the game and on 36 minutes Michael Jameson created space in the penalty area with some neat footwork. He tried a chip over the keeper but the ball went just wide. In the 40th minute, Yale and Nathan Jameson traded passes down the right which saw Michael Jameson shoot inches wide.

Half-time: Synners 1, Welfare 1

Synners took the lead early in the 2nd period when, in the 51st minute, a Magowan looping ball was latched onto by TYSON MASTERS. He lobbed the ball over Whittlestone and into the net.

Welfare responded, and a long ball forward found Lewis Wallace. His shot was well over. Then a minute later, on 58 minutes, Synners countered and Magowan poked the ball through to MICHAEL JAMESON who finished from close range to make it 3-1.

In the 60th minute, Baynes and Michael Jameson advanced down the left and set up Yale for a shot which deflected wide for a corner. Nathan Jameson's flag-kick found David Abel with a shot from close range which went just wide.

Billingham were now well in control of the game and playing some great football. In the 66th minute a Nathan Jameson long pass was inch perfect to Yale who controlled on the turn. His shot however, went over the cross-bar.

Glasshoughton had a great chance to get back in the game 2 minutes later. It was only a well timed tackle from Brian Close in the penalty area which denied the visitors a shot at goal.

Synners were still looking to extend the lead, and after 71 minutes, a Magowan close range effort walloped the upright with the ball falling to substitute Colin Iley. His shot was well blocked by Whittlestone.

Billingham made it 4-1 in the 75th minute. A Yale through-ball saw JAMES MAGOWAN run in on goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot which rifled into the net.

Synthonia added a fifth in the 80th minute with possibly the move of the match. Craig Perry won the ball at right-back and moved forward before finding Neil Campbell. He took a touch before making a defence-splitting pass to Joel Guy advancing to the right touchline. His ball across goal saw COLIN ILEY arrive in perfect time to send the ball under Whittlestone and into the net.

A great display from Billingham, who never gave Glasshoughton time to relax, with attack after attack. Synners are rewarded with a home tie in the next round against fellow Northern League opponents Morpeth Town or Ryton, whose game has twice been postponed for a waterlogged Morpeth pitch. It's back to league action on Saturday with a trip to Whitley Bay.
