Billingham Synthonia Dunston Federation
Match Report: 08/12/07
Billingham Synthonia 1, Dunston Federation 3

FA Carlsberg Vase 3rd Round

On a cold, windy and rain swept winter's day at the PTS Stadium, Synners welcomed fellow Arngrove Northern League side Dunston federation for this FA Carlsberg Vase 3rd Round fixture.

Colin Iley Billingham got off to a dream start when Christian Hanson sent a free kick into the penalty area. The ball was collected by COLIN ILEY, pictured right, who controlled the ball before firing past Clark from a tight angle.

Synners could have extended their lead when, after a corner, the ball fell to Hanson , who drove a low ball across the six-yard line only to see Clark get a touch to safety before any Billingham players could get on the end of it.

After 26 minutes Dunn sent in a shot from distance that went wide of the target as the visitors began to put the Synners rearguard under pressure.

Dunston almost got an equaliser after 32 minutes when Devine had a good strike at goal, only to see Jackson equal to it with a good save over the bar and out for a corner.

The visitors deservedly equalised after 40 minutes when a ball played in from the right was met with a header at the far post from DEVINE.

A minute later on 41 minutes, Dunston went ahead. A ball into the box deflected off MICHAEL JAMESON to leave Jackson with no chance.

Half-time: Synners 1, Dunston 2

Dunston had a great opportunity to extend their lead after 53 minutes, but Sean Hope made a great tackle in the penalty area to deny the visitors.

Synners could have got the equaliser as they tried to make the home advantage count. Jameson making a good run only to shoot straight at 'keeper Clark.

Dunston added a third goal after 65 minutes. The ball was cleared to DEVINE as Billingham were pressing for an equaliser. He had options to his left and right, but chose to go it alone as he fired in a low shot that picked up speed from the greasy surface to go past Jackson.

Billingham tried to get back into the game, but without any real cutting edge. The best chance came when the Dusnston 'keeper fumbled the ball after a cross. The ball fell into a crowd of players with Hope eventually seeing his shot blocked on the line.

In the end it was Dunston who deservedley progressed to the next round, with Billingham failing to capitalise on a great start. Synners are now out of all cup competitions, but lie third in the League, but there is a large gap opening up by Consett and Durham City at the top. A few bad results in the league could also see Synners plummet down the table.
