Billingham Synthonia Dunston Federation
Match Report: 02/02/08
Billingham Synthonia 2, Dunston Federation 0

Arngrove Northern League Division 1

Synthonia returned to the PTS Stadium this afternoon for their first home fixture of 2008 after 4 away trips. Dunston Federation were the visitors hoping to repeat their last visit in early December of last year when they knocked Synners out of the FA Vase.

Synners started the game brightly and went close in the fifth minute when Honeyman hit a 20-yard right foot shot that was deflected onto the post and then bounced kindly back into the arms of keeper Allport.

A minute later Dunston looked dangerous when a long throw from Burns was flicked on by Devine towards the far post but the danger was cleared by Shaw.

Dunston produced some good football in the 13th minute when Pattinson broke down the right and hit a good cross that was cleared by Atkinson with Devine coming in behind him.

Synners took the lead in the 21st minute when a cross from Shaw was cleared only as far as MICHAEL JAMESON who hit a powerful low left foot shot from 25 yards into the bottom corner of the net.

Dunston had a good chance after half an hour when a corner from Pattinson from the right found the unmarked Burns at the far post but his header went high over the bar.

In the 35th minute Synners increased their lead when a Baynes cross from the left beat everybody and fell to NEIL CAMPBELL at the far post who made no mistake as he crashed his six-yard shot into the far corner of the net.

It almost got better for Synners in the 40th minute when Iley broke into the box but his low shot was deflected wide of the post for a corner.

Half-time: Synners 2, Dunston 0

Within a minute of the restart Synners had another good chance when Honeyman played the ball through to Cater, who broke into the box but his right foot shot was well blocked by keeper Allport.

Another good chance went begging for Synners two minutes later when a long ball into the box from Hanson produced a first time shot from Iley that went wide of the post.

Dunston were trying to get back into the game and had a chance when Mark Campbell broke into the box but his low shot went across the goal and beyond the far post.

As the game progressed Synners started to play some good football but could only create a couple of half chances.

A long range effort from Close went over the bar and a first time shot on the turn from substitute Flanagan deflected wide from a corner.

Synners continued to go forward and had a chance after 82 minutes when a free kick from Shaw found Close in a crowded penalty area but his header went over the bar.

Dunston had a rare chance in the 85th minute when substitute Preen headed the ball into the path of Ludlow but his shot from a difficult angle went high over the bar to sum up Dunston’s afternoon.

The win moves Synners up to fifth place in the league table, and a perfect way to start a busy calendar month. Next up is Ashington away on Tuesday evening, weather permitting, for a last ever visit to Portland Park with the hosts aiming to move to their new ground before the end of February.
