Billingham Synthonia Bishop Auckland
Match Report: 10/10/07
Billingham Synthonia 2, Bishop Auckland 1

Arngrove Northern League Division 1

Bishops started the game the brighter of the two teams with some good possession, and created a number of early openings.

Synners' first effort came after 18 minutes when Michael Jameson sent over a cross that Neil Campbell just failed to reach.

After 23 minutes, Bishops had an excellent opportunity to take the lead when Adam Wheatley was caught in possession. A decent cross was sent over to be met with a header by Bishop's Ben Jackson, but Billingham 'keeper John Jackson saved to his left and out for a corner.

The game, becoming more open, almost had its first goal as Jameson sent over a free-kick aimed at Colin Iley who couldn't make a connection.

Billingham took the lead after 35 minutes when new signing James Beaumont sent in a free-kick from the left. BRIAN CLOSE headed across goal and into the net from the back post.

Synners could have increased their lead almost immediatley on 37 minutes as Campbell ran through and un-leashed a good shot that was saved by the visiting 'keeper Chris Porter.

After 39 minutes Bishop Auckland's Paul Crager had the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out for what looked like a push in the penalty area.

Half-time: Synners 1, Bishop Auckland 0

The second half began like the first with a good 15 minute spell from Bishops. Although the Synthonia rearguard held firm.

The visitors were rewarded for their efforts after 68 minutes with a breakaway goal that saw substitute DANE WILSON neatly finish to level the scores.

2 minutes later on 70 minutes Iley sent in a cross that was met by substitute Lee Flanagan who first headed, then shot from close range.

After 78 minutes Bishops had a long range speculative effort that sailed just over the bar.

Then after 80 minutes there was a scramble in the box as the visitors couldn't clear, the ball fell to Iley who just failed to make contact.

Bishop Auckland had an excellent chance to take the lead on 85 minutes when Jackson sent in a decent cross to an unmarked Wilson who sent his headed effort onto the post with the goal gaping.

A minute later the ball was at the other end as Beaumont sent in a shot that was saved by the Bishops 'keeper Porter.

Synners, being urged forward by the coaching staff and supporters had another chance to nick the game on 89 minutes. Beaumont sent in a good cross which was met by Campbell, who laid it back for Jameson to strike, but he couldn't get hold of his shot.

Then as the game looked to be heading for a stalemate, Synners sent in an injury-time free-kick which wasn't dealt with by the visiting defence. The ball fell to ex-Bishop player LEV YALCIN who fired in from outside the penalty area to give Billingham all three points.
