SYNNERS gave a debut to former Nottingham Forest starlet James Beaumont for today’s visit of struggling Ashington and he showed some silky touches in a bright start for the home side.
Synners had a good shout for a penalty waved away after three minutes when Colin Iley was bundled over.
Soon after they went close as Simon Shaw crossed into a crowded box and Lee Flanagan volleyed just over on the turn.
On 15 minutes Synners went close again as striker Neil Campbell squared for Michael Jameson to rifle over from 20 yards.
On 20 minutes they had the ball in the net as Jameson picked out Campbell with a superb ball into the box and he fired a low shot inside the post but the offside flag had gone up.
Synners continued to set the pace and went close on 25 minutes as Jameson sent a free kick dipping to the far post where Iley just failed to connect.
And they almost made the breakthrough on 37 minutes as a stinging Shaw shot was charged down, then Campbell drilled the rebound towards the near post but the keeper went full length to save.
And the pressure continued on 40 minutes as first an Iley shot was blocked in a crowded box then the rebound fell to Jameson just outside the box but his curling shot towards the far top corner was superbly tipped over.
Ashington keeper Simpson made another fine save on the stroke of half-time getting down low to claw away a Jameson shot.

Ashington rallied briefly after the break and Synners were forced to defend for a spell.
But the home side reasserted themselves and continued to create chances.
They went close on 50 minutes as Flanagan flashed a ball across the face of goal and then Campbell headed just wide from a Shaw free kick.
On 55 minutes Synners striker Mickey Dunwell came off the bench for his first appearance in over a year after being sidelined following knee surgery.
Synners continued to dominate and threatened as Shaw slammed a free kick straight into the wall, then soon after, a Shaw cross was headed high and wide at the far post by Campbell.
But for all the possession Synners were struggling to find a final telling ball into the box and were becoming increasingly frustrated as the play became scrappy.
They carved out a good chance three minutes from time as Beaumont sent Flanagan down the right and he cut the ball to the edge of the box but Dunwell’s shot was weak and straight at the keeper.
Ashington could have snatched it at the death as a Synners free kick was cleared and McAndrew set off on a 60-yard run before firing wide at the other end.
Synners almost won it deep in stoppage time as a Jameson cross came to the near post for Dunwell to head goal-wards but the alert keeper collected.
