Match Report: 17/08/08 Glasshoughton Welfare 2, Billingham Synthonia 2
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Synners travelled to West Yorkshire side Glasshoughton Welfare of the North Counties Eastern League Division 1, for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round match. Brian Close Returned to the starting eleven, with Mark Casey also making his first start this term.
Synthonia started the game on the front foot and immediately looked for goal. In the 2nd minute Nathan Jameson set himself for a free-kick in a good position, but the Welfare defence cleared. A minute later Jameson then set up David Yale, his low shot was well saved by the home keeper Dave Whittlestone as he parried behind for a corner.
The hosts came back at Synners and in the 5th minute a ball over the top aimed at John Coppinger was cut out by Captain David Abel. Then after 8 minutes Matthew Jackson was sent clear on goal. His shot however, was straight at Synners' keeper Peter Keen.
Billingham had a great chance in the 11th minute when Neil Campbell was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Nathan Jameson's free-kick though, went straight at the wall. Sibling Michael Jameson followed up the rebound, but his shot was blocked.
After 13 minutes, Glasshoughton's Michael Amos made a good run down the right flank, but failed to pick out a Welfare shirt with his cross. Then 2 minutes later, Amos found the over-lapping right-back Jack Kirk. His cross lacked direction and went behind for a goal-kick.
Synners were soon back on the attack, and in the 17th minute some good work in the box from Nathan Jameson to keep the ball, saw him lay-off to Michael Cater. Cater's low shot bringing a good save out of Whittlestone.
Billingham continued to have the upper hand, and after 24 minutes Campbell found himself free just to the left of goal. He curled a shot round the defender, but Whittlestone again denied the visitors as he tipped the effort round the post. Two minutes later Tyson Masters was sent clear on goal. He produced a good shot which beat Whittlestone, but watched agonisingly as the ball clipped the post.
Yale then found Nathan Jameson in space outside the penalty area after 28 minutes as Synners really piled on the pressure. Jameson, who had time, sent his shot over the bar. Masters then went clear of the Welfare defence again in the 30th minute. This time Whittlestone was off his line quickly to make the block.
The hosts had a brief attack on goal in the 33rd minute, gaining a corner on the left that was met by Captain Nigel Croad at the far side. His ball back in was headed wide for a goal kick.
After 38 minutes Yale and Nathan Jameson combined in midfield to send Campbell through on goal. A Glasshoughton defender however, was on hand to make a timely interception.
Synners eventually made a breakthrough in the 39th minute. Campbell sent Nathan Jameson through in the penalty area. Jameson took the ball passed the keeper, but Whittlestone brought him down and referee Paul Thompson had no option but to point to the penalty spot. DAVID YALE stepped up and coolly placed his spot-kick to the left, with Whittlestone guessing the wrong way.

Welfare started the second period with more attacking purpose, and in the 51st minute Richard Britten saw his 25-yard free-kick blocked. Then in the 54th minute there was a mix-up in the Synthonia rearguard and the ball came to RICHARD MARCHANT, his long speculative shot found its way into the net as keeper Keen misjudged the direction of the ball.
Synthonia were straight back on the attack when a Nathan Jameson header from midfield sent Masters clear. Whittlestone was out quickly to block. Then Welfare cleared and the ball fell to Britten, who's shot after 61 minutes went just wide of the upright.
In the 63rd minute Masters worked hard to win the ball and fed in Campbell, but his shot went wide. Two minutes later a Yale corner from the left saw a goalmouth scramble that Whittlestone eventually managed to clear.
The hosts then gained a free-kick in a good position that was cleared by the Billingham defence. the ball fell to Richard Dobson who saw his effort go just wide of the post.
Synners re-gained the lead in the 68th minute. Some good strong work from Campbell found Nathan Jameson. he laid the ball right to substitute JOEL GUY who was advancing, he hit the ball first time from 20 yards and it flew into the goal.
After 78 minutes Masters did well on the right flank to beat his man and cross for Nathan Jameson. His header however, lacked any strong connection and the ball went harmlessly wide.
Billingham had a great chance to kill the game in the 89th minute when Nathan Jameson sent a long ball over the top of the Welfare defence to the on-rushing Masters. With Whittlestone stranded as he advanced, Masters lobbed the ball over the keeper from 40 yards but it went wide of the target.
Glasshoughton earned a replay in the 92nd minute. Synners lost possession in midfield and the hosts moved the ball swiftly through the visiting defence. A cross then found MICHAEL AMOS open at the back post, and he had time to pick his spot to level.
Synthonia created enough chances to win the game, but came up against a keeper in fine form, as well as rueing missed opportunities. Billingham now turn from visitors to hosts as they welcome the West Yorkshire side to the PTS Stadium on Wednesday evening.
